Soundtrack of a Sweater: The Pluie Cardigan

I can finally share- two of my designs are being featured in Interweave Knits Fall 2012 (scroll down to see photos)! This is the first that I've been published in print and I'm incredibly excited. I'm glad to say that it won't be the last; more patterns will be in print Spring 2013 (and with any luck Winter 2012/13).

I thought it would be fun to put together a soundtrack of music I was listening to while designing and knitting the Pluie Cardigan. I hope you enjoy the music as much as I do.

Soundtrack of a Sweater:

The Pluie Cardigan

The Pluie Cardigan

Pluie was inspired by a rainy weekend day- umbrellas to will the rain away and a cardigan to stay warm and cozy while curled up with a book. I got the idea of doing an all over motif from Victoria Beckham's spring 2012 cat dress. I'm thrilled with the result. Not for the faint of heart, this intarsia cardigan is great for knitters looking for a challenge.

I love that Interweave included a picture of the wrong side.
I'm pretty proud of my finishing work.

The Woven Rain Hat

The Woven Rain Hat features a simple, classic herringbone pattern. It was inspired by vintage 50s and 60s fedoras and is great for fall and winter. This is the first time that I worked with stainless steel wool and I chose it because I wanted the hat to have stability without being felted. The weave of the herringbone also helps the hat keep its shape. The challenge for me with this hat was figuring out how to increase and decrease within the pattern so that it looked consistent. Enjoy!

  1. This is really charming! Can hardly wait to knit one of my own. And I'm curious about the LB Collection Wool Stainless Steel, so I think that will be a fun learning experience too. This is next in my Ravelry queue :)

And congrats on getting published! Both patterns are great.

  2. I fell in love with the cardigan and just saw that you live in Fredericksburg, VA like me. How exciting to have such a talented designer close by. I been to the Old Town Yarnery a couple time, but haven't been to classes or knit night. Anyway, congrats and I will definitely buy that issue just for the cardigan pattern. Courtney

  3. I can't wait to make the pluie cardigan! I was thinking it might look cool in a madeline tosh merino light in a greeny or bluey shade with white umbrellas in a similar weight yarn? Would this work? -Pru

    1. MadTosh Merino Light should work for this design. The difference you might see is in the finishing- the shetland wool blends the ends you'll be weaving in beautifully. Because the madtosh is silkier you may see where things were woven in more easily. I'd love to see your finished project- be sure to share it at facebook.com/worldknits. -Alex

  4. I've never worked with Intarsia. Would this sweater be too difficult to begin this skill?

    1. This is definitely an advanced intarsia project. If you are new to intarsia I would start with a single simple motif so that you get used to working with multiple strands of yarn.
