The Nottingham Infinity Scarf

Model: Michael Capshaw-Taylor
My friend Tom wanted a bulky infinity scarf and wasn't having any luck finding one he liked. Knowing that I do custom knits he asked me to design something. I wanted something that was masculine, but that would look good on both men and women. I came up with the Nottingham Infinity Scarf (achieved using a provisional cast on and kitchener stitch). I love the contrast of the perpendicular rib - it switches between 2 x 2 rib and 2 x 2 garter. Knit using tweed it is ultra chic and great for winter, with or without a jacket. The pattern is available as a free download from worldknit & handspun. Be sure to add your project to ravelry when you complete it.

  1. Can you provide a picture of the scarf flat, in good lighting? The way it's worn all pleated up it's impossible to tell what it really looks like.

  2. I've updated this post with two photos of the scarf off of the model so you can get a better look at the construction. The first of the two photos is of the scarf laid flat and folded in half twice.

  3. Dear Alex, thank you so much for posting this free pattern on ravelry. Its a great looking infinity scarf. I have just started the project but before I get much further, I wanted to ask for your advice please.
I am using a different yarn to the one you recommend but I am using the same needle size (5.5mm). The yarn I have is a Gedifra Riana. Its 50% new wool, 45% acrylic and 5% viscose. The gauge is 19sts to 25 rows on 5mm needles. What would be the outcome if I used this yarn instead of the one you recommend? Kind regards.

  4. Gedifra Riana is a great substitute. You should get nearly identical results and will use about the same amount of yarn (4 skeins should still be enough). The best way to determine if the yarn will work for a project is to do a gauge swatch. If you get the same gauge as I have listed in the project then the results will be the same. If you are getting more sts than gauge go up a needle size and try again. If you are getting too few sts than go down a needle size. Best of luck. Can't wait to see your FO.

  5. The link doesn't work, and I really wanted to make this scarf. Is there another website that I can get the pattern from? You can email me at abalducci69@gmail.com -- Thanks!

  6. Thanks for letting me know the link is down. It's been fixed. You can find this pattern and others that I've designed at www.worldknits.com. Can't wait to see your finished object.

  7. Hi, I've been looking for an infinity scarf pattern and I'd like to try this, but would like to use some yarn I already have.. Taria Tweed by Plymouth Yarn. The gauge on the packaging says 3.5 sts = 1" with US 9 needles. It's considered a bulky yarn.. do you think this yarn would be appropriate? I only have 4 skeins of this yarn. Thanks!

    1. This yarn will work, however you'll want to modify the length of each section so that each section (ribbed or welted) takes up a single skein. That way your scarf will be symmetrical. Also, sorry for the delayed response. I've been in China, where social media, including blogger, was blocked.

  8. Are you selling any of the scarfs?

    1. No. Unfortunately handknits are too costly to produce for sale.

  9. Hi, do you mind listing the colors of the yarn used for the four scarves in the last picture? Thank you.

  10. What are the measurements (length and width) of the scarf?

  11. Undoubtedly, infinity scarf is perfect not just only for women, but also for men. Good to see that this infinity scarf is well-match for the men. Thanks for sharing this post. This infinity scarf is so good.

    1. Hi Michelle, Sorry for the broken link. I've updated it so that it will download as soon as you click on it. If you are still having trouble you can find the pattern on ravelry using the link found directly after the download link.

  13. Thanks for this pattern! I have made several as gifts for friends and they are a hit. I am no accomplished knitter though and have a question about the provisional cast on. I always end up with an odd number and not the even 42 the pattern calls for. I count the slip knot that starts the provisional cast on as one and then each loop-de-loop provisional cast on makes 2 more, thus always odd. Can you help me understand what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!
